This mezzotint portrait of James Gillray was created by Charles Turner in 1819 four years after Gillray's death. It is based, however, on a miniature painted on ivory by Gillray himself in 1800 when he was 43 years old. The miniature, now in the National Portrait Gallery, was a gift to his friend and employer, Hannah Humphrey, and certainly the best representation of the caricaturist at the height of his powers.
